Why run a speed test?
Even though your website may seem to work fine at first glance, there's always room for improvement. This is where web performance optimization comes in, a technique known as Web Performance Optimization (WPO, improving loading speed and site efficiency). But why run a speed test?
When you test regularly, you can identify areas for improvement and measure the impact of your changes. Any adjustment, whether optimizing images or compressing files, has a direct impact on loading speed and user experience.
Tools to measure web speed
Pingdom Tools: speed and efficiency
Pingdom Tools is a simple yet effective option. All you need to do is enter the page URL to get results in seconds. The report includes key metrics (performance, loading speed, and page size) and clearly tells you how to improve each aspect.
GTMetrix: your ally for web performance optimization
If you're looking for a more detailed analysis, GTMetrix is an excellent choice. They recommend a free registration to unlock all features, and it's worth it, especially during intensive optimization phases. It offers continuous checks, which gives it an advantage over Pingdom Tools: you can tweak the site constantly and make sure it always runs smoothly.
WebPagetest: precision in analysis
If you want accurate results, WebPagetest is the tool. It runs three tests: one without cache (the browser's fast memory that prevents re-downloading what you already have) and two with cache enabled. It shows you how page elements load over time. It may take a bit longer due to its popularity, but it's worth the wait to get detailed and reliable information.
Google PageSpeed Insights: Google's favorite
If you want Google's seal of approval, PageSpeed Insights is the perfect option. It gives specific tips to improve speed and performance. Plus, it analyzes both mobile and desktop, which is crucial in today's mobile era.
How to get the most out of these tools
As you make changes, it's essential to keep analyzing speed. That said, I suggest you focus on one key tool throughout the process. I prefer GTMetrix, but any option will give you a consistent benchmark to evaluate improvements.
For example, if you're optimizing, run regular tests with GTMetrix to observe the effects of your adjustments. When you're done, use other tools like WebPagetest or PageSpeed Insights to confirm you're on the right track.
The importance of speed in SEO
Google values loading speed as a key factor in its search algorithm. A faster site means a better experience for users, and Google rewards sites that prioritize this experience. So you'll not only increase visitor satisfaction, but you'll also boost your chances of ranking higher in search results.
And speed isn't the only piece of the puzzle: things like security headers on your site or schema markup: what it is and how it can help your website also matter.
