Sitemaps over http, the stalled scheduler, and a calendar that wouldn't display

A calendar that ignored instant-publish items, a sitemap that Google flagged invalid, a scheduler that froze a migration for half an hour, and a handful of smaller polishings – all in a single shift.

A calendar that didn't show everything that was published

The day started early with a detail in the editorial calendar of the dashboard: it only showed scheduled posts. The ones that are published instantly from the editor, without a scheduling date, were invisible in the view. The easy route would have been to repurpose the scheduling field, but the scheduled-publish webhooks consult that very same field and would have fired duplicate notifications. So the right thing to do was to add a new column, published_at, stamped when the post becomes visible, with the migration filling in the historical record with the appropriate date in each case.

With the column in place, the calendar now groups by effective date: scheduled in amber, published in green (and not draggable, so nobody unpublishes anything by accident), counters per status, and an unpublish button that didn't exist before for instant-publish items.

An environment note I'm keeping for future sessions: this Mac doesn't have Docker, so the official route via the test suite doesn't exist here. A virtual environment with the backend dependencies and python -m unittest does the job: 101 of 115 tests pass, and the remaining 14 fail because of container paths: no broken code.

The mystery of the "invalid" sitemap

Google Search Console had been flagging the sitemap as broken for days. First layer of the diagnosis: the sitemap served by becoach.biz was well-formed, but the code had real gaps – the hreflang tags for translations were missing and section articles were never included in the list, and therefore neither in the sitemap. I fixed it in the template and in becoach with a shared module: hreflang with its default alternative, canonical origin taken from the site configuration rather than the request, section articles included, and a busy-server response with retry if the API doesn't answer.

But with web-base-astro the warning persisted. I logged in via SSH to the server and reproduced it: the sitemap was emitting all URLs over http, without TLS. The container receives requests via HTTP and the code built URLs from the incoming request. Google requires https with the canonical domain, hence the "invalid" flag. The canonical tags and social media tags shared the same defect. I applied the same fix and verified it with a fake API locally: everything comes out over https even when the incoming request has no TLS.

One detail remains beyond my reach: Cloudflare's firewall returns a 403 error to Google's bot even when it identifies itself as such. The verified-bots rule in its dashboard needs reviewing.

The scheduler that froze a migration

The most delicate report came from production: the becoach update had been stuck for half an hour at "Applying migrations…" and the site was still untranslated despite having two new languages active. Looking at the Postgres sessions, the cause surfaced: the scheduler was keeping a database transaction open while the AI calls were waiting for the translation provider's exhausted quota, with retries of up to a minute. The migration was waiting behind that transaction, and everything else behind the migration.

I released the blocked session manually, the update completed and filled in the entire historical record, and the fix is in the core: close the transaction before each long stretch of AI calls, translate manually-published posts as well (previously only automatic ones were translated), log a warning when a translation fails instead of swallowing the error, and limit the attempts per cycle. The provider's quota is still exhausted: recharging it is a pending task for the owner.

Details that also matter

  • The dashboard's Settings hub had sections without an icon: the map was drawn manually and was missing 4 of the 11 sections. Now icons are resolved by name from the library, with tests that ensure it. It will ship with the next core release.
  • The public chat on the sites was converting Markdown with half-baked regular expressions. Now it processes the full format – tables, code, lists, quotes – with strict sanitization of the resulting HTML, and I verified that an injected script is rendered as text without executing. Applied to template, web-base, and becoach.
  • The showcase site has debuted mockups: hero, calendar, knowledge, people, and integrations, always with anonymized data, plus an architecture diagram showing two isolated installations with their own data.
  • The build flow of this site now rebuilds the image on every push and with the real domain baked into the build: the site's refresh button in the dashboard always has an applicable image.

Still pending

Applying the next core release (Settings icons and scheduler fixes), pressing the refresh button for the web-base-astro site, the Cloudflare bots rule, and recharging the translation quota. Nothing blocking, but worth keeping in mind.
