Complete PDF Viewers and Production in a Single Night
The end-to-end run with real material wrapped up the feature (two genuinely red checks, proof that the tool actually validates the material), and two hours later, the viewers were already live at magazine.escandell.cat.
On Wednesday night, I completed the PDF viewer functionality end to end. Ticket 06, the end-to-end run with real material, took less than two hours: creating issue n90 through the dashboard with material put together on the spot—a DOCX with styles (Heading 1/2 and Quote) and an embedded image, plus a one-page finished layout—, scanning, AI-free extraction (the style layer covered everything), laying it out across eight pages, and exporting it for print.
The issue viewer displayed the PDF inline with its download button. The print viewer went much further: with all six checks visible, two genuinely RED—the TrimBox missing on the pages of the finished material (WeasyPrint without @page marks) and an image at 42 effective PPI placed too large. The tool really does validate the material, which is exactly what it was asked to do. Embedded fonts, per-page colors with the RGB warning for the DOCX image, boxes with origin information, a heatmap, and an on-demand K plate. The re-export invalidated the cache as it should have: new inodes for the pages, analisis-v1.json, and the index.
None of the noted friction points is a blocker: finished materials without marks leave the TrimBox red—the remedy lies at the source, generating them with marks or bleed—and the dashboard's “with red checks (2)” warning worked exactly as promised by the ticket 03 fix. Production deployment remains pending, for the user to handle when the time comes.
And two hours later, the code was already in production. Fast-forward merge of feature/visor-pdf into main (7 commits, 2,065 lines added), push to GitHub, and deployment to fxserver with docker compose up --build. Clean startup, no errors in the logs, and the public health check returned 200. The viewer feature is now live at magazine.escandell.cat: the issue viewer lets you view the PDF without downloading it, while the print viewer validates fonts, colors, ink, and plates before anything is sent to the workshop.
